There’s always that one special thing you and your family do for Thanksgiving. One of my favorites is playing games after most everyone else has left. Uno and Phase 10 are usually the go-to’s, but last year I made the mistake/awesome decision to introduce my family to Cards Against Humanity.

That’s right, I played Cards Against Humanity with my mom, grandmother and assorted siblings. I explained things I never dreamed I’d have to explain, but my mom laughed so hard she cried and promptly bought a copy of the game “for special occasions.” (This year, I’m taking Exploding Kittens. I’ll let you know how that goes.)

This topic popped up during our Off Madison Ave Thanksgiving Potluck last week, so I gathered some of the stories to share. Feel free to share your own in the comment section!

“My dad always fries a turkey in the backyard, so we all drink beer and monitor the fryer so it doesn’t explode.”

-Kat, Digital Designer

“We play Scrabble. Don’t judge.”

– Lisa, Dev Master

“I make creamed corn every year. And we also make a point of NOT participating in Black Friday.”

-Dan, Art Director

“After we finish dinner (which is more like lunch because we eat super early) we play card games. I’m talking marathon for the rest of the day and late into the night. We play everything from blitz (some call it 31) and pinochle (no, I’m not 90 years old) to poker, dominos and our ultimate family favorite: hand and foot.”

– Kayla, PR Account Executive

“Thanksgiving at our house is full of family, friends and of course, food. But one of my favorite traditions is trying my dad’s signature cocktail creation. It’s new every year and tastes like fall in a cup.”

-Cara, PR Account Coordinator

Oh gosh. I don’t think we do anything particularly unique. Big meal, a movie…generally being sloths. Someone is bound to be the lovely person who spends the whole day volunteering at a kitchen, and I’m just sitting here stuffing my face.”

– Erik, Development Director

“Beyond the usual giving thanks and celebrating what we love about each other, we have one additional Thanksgiving tradition. We hit Piestewa Peak for a morning hike to help burn off the calories we know we’ll eat later in the day and to show our appreciation and gratitude for Mother Nature.”

– Sasha, Client Services

“My favorite holiday tradition is when I FaceTime my family in St. Louis. It is the next best thing to being there in person. Except for when my mom gives the phone to my 6-year-old nephew who hasn’t quite grasped the concept of steady hands.”

– Carol, VP, Partner, Director of PR and Social Media

“Ooh! Early morning Turkey Burn! For the last three years, I wake up at 4:30 a.m. for an insane workout before heading up to Sedona to see the family, swinging by Rock Springs Cafe in Black Canyon for a couple pies.”
